Cunard Line was formed in 1839 principally to carry the Royal Mail between the UK and North America, and in doing so inaugurated in 1840 the first timetabled steamship service across the Atlantic.

In May 1998, Cunard Line was acquired by a consortium led by the Carnival Corporation. At the same time, Cunard was merged with the Carnival-owned Seabourn Cruise Line to create Cunard Seabourn Limited, the biggest luxury cruise operator in the cruise industry, offering over 50% of the five-star market. In October 1999, Carnival Corporation announced their acquisition of the remainder of Cunard from the Norwegian consortium involved, subsequently owning 100% of Cunard Line.

Cunard Seabourn Limited has two luxury cruise brands - Cunard Line and Seabourn Cruise Line. In late 1999, the two fleets were reorganised with three ships undergoing major refits and four being renamed. The range of diversified fleet of ships from the luxury liners includes Queen Elizabeth 2, Caronia and Queen Mary 2 to the superyacht like cruise such as Seabourn Pride, Spirit and Legend.

For over 60 years, there has been a Cunard “Queen” sailing the oceans. The new Queen Mary 2 will be the first built in more than a generation.The original Queen Mary captured the imagination of the British people, and of the world. Symbolizing renewed hope and national pride at a time when the world was recovering from an economic depression, she was a superliner of revolutionary design, and great size, power and speed.
